Cybercriminals regularly breach computer security systems, stealing millions of dollars and credit card numbers in cases that companies keep secret, said the FBI's top Internet crimes investigator on Tuesday.

Companies that are victims of cybercrime are reluctant to come forward out of fear the publicity will hurt their reputations, scare away customers and hurt profits. Sometimes they don't report the crimes to the FBI at all. In other cases they wait so long that it is tough to track down evidence.

Gamers are used to confronting invading terrorists, nuclear attacks, and natural calamities — in virtual form. But those living in New York State could soon receive warnings about real emergencies through their favorite video console.

State authorities are testing a plan that would see the Emergency Management Office issue alerts over online gaming networks in addition to regular channels. The goal, said New York State Deputy Chief Information Officer (CIO), is to reach younger residents who spend more time on the Xbox, PlayStation, or Wii than with television or radio.

Two draft bills intended to improve the security of cyberspace were combined into one piece of legislation that was passed Wednesday by the House Committee on Science and Technology.

The Cybersecurity Enhancement Act of 2009, would support cybersecurity research and development and advance the creation of international cybersecurity standards.  The legislation is a combination of two draft bills that were recently approved by House subcommittees.

Cyberattacks On U.S. Military Up In 2009 PDF Print E-mail

Cyberattacks on the U.S. Department of Defense — many of them coming from China — have jumped sharply in 2009, a U.S. congressional committee reported Thursday.

Citing data provided by the U.S. Strategic Command, the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission said that there were 43,785 malicious cyber incidents targeting Defense systems in the first half of the year.

US Senate: Most of Cyber Attacks Preventable PDF Print E-mail

If network administrators simply instituted proper configuration policies and conducted good network monitoring, about 80 percent of commonly known cyber attacks could be prevented, a Senate committee heard on November 17.

The remark was made by the National Security Agency’s information assurance director, who added that simply adhering to already known best practices would sufficiently raise the security bar so that attackers would have to take more risks to breach a network, “thereby raising [their] risk of detection.”
